The city of Chernigiv, just 50 km from the Belarusian border, was never captured by Russian forces, but it was pounded with artillery and airstrikes for more than a month before the invading army withdrew. City officials estimate around 350 civilians were killed, and signs of the bombardment are everywhere: from drawings left behind by children hiding in the hospital basement for days, to the mass graves of the residents of an apartment building.
